(Core Brass Quintet)
David Michaux, trumpet
Born and raised in Victoria, David has been Second Trumpet with the Victoria Symphony since 2001. Previous to this position, he was Principal Trumpet with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra for two seasons and Acting Principal Trumpet with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra for one season. During the 2004-2005 season, David was an acting member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. David studied at the University of British Columbia (M. Mus.) and the University of Victoria (B. Mus.) and is an alumni of the Aspen Music Festival and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. David is currently on the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
Stevan Paranosic, trumpet
Stevan Paranosic has performed as Acting Second Trumpet with the Victoria Symphony, and was formerly Principal Trumpet of the Vancouver Island Symphony in Nanaimo, BC. He has also performed with the Vancouver, Prince George, and Okanagan Symphony Orchestras.
Stevan holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Windsor and a Masters degree from the University of British Columbia.
Dan Moses, horn
Dan was born in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up in Oakville, Ontario. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University in 1990, and then held the position of Principal Horn of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra in St. John's for three seasons. A member of the Victoria Symphony since 2000, Dan also plays horn in Victoria's Palm Court Light Orchestra, and teaches privately, in addition to his work with the Beacon Hill Brass.
Dan has been a Primary Reservist with the Canadian Forces since 1986 and is currently the Band Sergeant-Major of the only Reserve Band on Vancouver Island, the 5th (British Columbia) Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery Band. His principal teachers include John Vanderspek, Harcus Hennigar, James MacDonald, Jean Gaudreault and John Milner. Highlight of his career so far? Playing Mahler Symphony #1 at Carnegie Hall with the McGill Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Timothy Vernon in 1988.
Brad Howland, trombone/euphonium
Brad Howland holds the Principal Trombone chair of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, and has performed in the past with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, CBC Vancouver Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Palm Court Orchestra, and new music group Aventa Ensemble.
Brad has taught trombone and euphonium on the faculty of the Comox Valley Youth Music Centre, Victoria Conservatory of Music, Marrowstone Music Festival, and University of Victoria. He is a member of the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN).
Paul Beauchesne, tuba
Paul Beauchesne has been with the Victoria Symphony as Principal Tuba since 2004. He is a founding member of the Beacon Hill Brass Quintet and serves on the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Prior to moving to Victoria he performed across Canada and the United States with the Calgary based Foothill Brass Quintet. His first orchestral position was with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa. In addition he has performed with various ensembles including the Boston Symphony, Tanglewood Music Center, and the Vancouver Symphony. Paul has played on numerous recordings and is active as a clinician and adjudicator.
